Behind the Build: Creating a 3D Wood Map of Oahu, Hawaii

Every handcrafted 3D wood map begins with detailed planning, precision design, and a careful process that transforms raw materials into a meaningful piece of artwork.
This behind-the-scenes look showcases an early stage of our Oahu, Hawaii 3D wood map as it begins to take shape. While the map is still a work in progress, these photos and video provide a glimpse into the craftsmanship involved — from laser engraving and cutting each individual layer to preparing the pieces for assembly.
Each layer is carefully designed and cut from premium Baltic birch wood using precision laser technology. The process captures the unique shape of the island, coastline details, and surrounding ocean features to create a dimensional piece that brings Oahu to life.
As the layers are assembled, the depth and detail of the map begin to emerge. Every piece is carefully aligned, inspected, and prepared by hand before moving into the finishing stages.
The craftsmanship doesn’t stop with the map itself. Each finished piece is paired with a handcrafted wooden frame made from scratch in our workshop. Customers can choose from a classic black finish or a natural wood finish, with every frame built specifically to complement the map. Unlike mass-produced frames purchased from large retailers, our frames are individually created to match each custom piece and complete the handmade experience from start to finish.
This Oahu project is also part of our continued exploration into bathymetric 3D wood maps, incorporating ocean depth and underwater terrain to showcase not only the land but the surrounding waters that make each location unique.
